About Me

Chris OwensI was born and brought up in Somerset, close to the North Somerset levels. It was on early-morning walks, from a young age, that I developed my interest in wildlife. After 30 years in education, IT and media, I left the corporate world to focus on freelance photography, sound recording, video and design work. For details of my services please take a look at the Services section of the website.

About My Photography

WoodpeckerI have been creating images for many years. I started in the 1960s with a Brownie 127, given to me by my parents. In the early 1970s I bought a Russian Zenith SLR. By the end of that decade I had progressed to a Pentax MX SLR - this lasted me for many years. After a brief break from still photography to work in video, I re-entered photography with a Canon EOS 1000F during the 1990s, followed by a Canon EOS 5. I later added a Bronica medium format camera to my kit.

In 2005 I went over to a completely digital workflow. My first digital SLR was a Canon EOS 20D. I still use this as a back up and for some special projects such as animation and time-lapse. My main camera now is a Canon EOS 5DMkII: a superb camera for both still and video work. I also use a Fujifilm X-Pro2 for travel and street photography.

About My Recording

paramicI have been recording sounds almost as far back as I can remember. My main interest has always been in recording rural and urban soundscapes. I have also done more conventional recordings for both local radio and hospital radio, and recording demos for bands.

Some of my recordings have been used for audio documentaries, as components of "sound images", and in web site.

I also record talks and conferences, produce CD masters and manage the production through to the finished CD, which includes design of the associated artwork.

The earlier sound samples on this site have been recorded on either a Sony RZ30 Personal Minidisc recorder or an HHB 500 Portadisc.
