About My Recording

paramicI have been recording sounds almost as far back as I can remember. My main interest has always been in recording rural and urban soundscapes. I have also done more conventional recordings for both local radio and hospital radio, and recording demos for bands.

Some of my recordings have been used for audio documentaries, as components of "sound images", and in web site.

I also record talks and conferences, produce CD masters and manage the production through to the finished CD, which includes design of the associated artwork.

The earlier sound samples on this site have been recorded on either a Sony RZ30 Personal Minidisc recorder or an HHB 500 Portadisc.

My current recording line-up includes:

  • SoundDevices 722 Digital Recorder
  • Tascam DR-60DMKII 4-Channel Portable Recorder
  • Edirol R-09 Digital Recorder
  • In the studio I use direct-to-disc recording through a MOTU 828 MkII and a Focusrite Octopre LE

I currently use a small selection of microphones:

  • Telinga Pro 5 Stereo-DAT Parabolic microphone
  • Sennheiser MKH 30/50 combination as an MS stereo pair with "Hairy Dog"
  • Soundman OKM-II binaural microphones
  • Røde NT3 microphones (either single or as a stereo pair)
  • Sony ECM-MS957 Single-point, Stereo microphone. Some of the earlier recording were done with the ECM-MS907.
  • Sennheiser ME-series mics

For monitoring during recording, I use a pair of Sennheiser HD-25 "Closed" headphones.

In the studio I use Adobe Audition and Ableton LIve.
